Getting Started

To begin the installation process of the free version of VMware on Windows, follow the outlined steps in this guide.

To use VMware you'll need to enable virtualization and you can follow the video guide below to do that.

Step 1: Download VMware Player

1. Open your preferred web browser and perform a Google search for "VMware Player."
2. Look for the result that mentions "VMware Workstation Player" and click on it.
3. On the [VMware page,] find and click the "Download for Free" button.
4. Navigate to the "Product Downloads" section and select "Go to Downloads."
5. On the [following page,] choose the option for Windows by clicking on the "Download Now" button for the VMware Player for Windows. The file is approximately 600 MB, so download time will vary based on your internet connection.

Step 2: Install VMware Player

1. Once the download is complete, open the downloaded file to start the VMware Workstation Player installation process. At this point, you can close your browser.
2. A prompt will appear asking you to restart your computer. You can choose to restart now or later, depending on if you need to save any work. For the purposes of this guide, we will restart now.
3. After your computer has restarted, return to your downloads folder and run the VMware Player installation file again to open the VMware Setup Wizard.
4. Proceed by clicking "Next," accept the terms by checking the corresponding box, and then click "Next" again.
5. You'll be presented with options to add an enhanced keyboard driver and to reboot your computer again. It's recommended to select both options and then click "Next."
6. Leave the option checked to look for product updates at startup. You can choose whether or not to join the VMware Improvement Program. Then, click "Next."
7. Decide if you want to create shortcuts on your desktop or start menu, select accordingly, and click "Next."
8. Click "Install" to begin the installation of VMware on your computer.

Step 3: Finalize Installation

1. Upon completing the setup, a window will appear. If you have a license for VMware, you can enter your license key now. Otherwise, for free use, simply click "Finish."
2. You might be prompted to restart your computer again. Go ahead and confirm by clicking "Yes."

Launching VMware Player

After your computer has restarted, you will find the VMware icon on your desktop. Double-click it to launch VMware Player. If you have a license key, enter it here; if not, select the option for free, non-commercial use and click "Continue," then "Finish." This will launch VMware Workstation Player on your computer, ready for you to create a new virtual machine or open an existing one. However, this guide will not cover those steps.
